Kate and Simon Kennedy started Killary Fjord Shellfish in 1989 in one of Ireland’s most scenic locations – The Killary Fjord. Ireland is blessed with only one fjord and Kate and Simon carry our their daily chores of harvesting shellfish right on it’s shores. The shelter in the fjord with the mixture of sea water from the Wild Atlantic Way and the fresh water, meandering it’s way down from the surrounding mountain ranges provides an ideal environment to produce top quality mussels.
Simon, spent many years fishing commercially in Alaska, another outstandingly scenic place. After that harsh and isolated environment, Killary and Connemara will never seem remote or inclement to him! Simon manages the entire mussel farming, harvesting and purification operation and enjoys a 90 second commute to work.
Kate handles all of the sales and marketing for the business and cooks the most delicious lunches for visitors, with fresh shellfish, chowder and homemade breads and treats.
From their living room, with the vista of the fjord and the walkway on which many thousands of walkers explore every year, Kate and Simon spotted an opportunity to offer tours of their facility and give visitors a taste (literally) of what they produce.
